Tears and Tributes as Anambra Assembly Honors Slain Lawmaker, Justice Azuka

Date:

The Anambra State House of Assembly was steeped in grief as lawmakers, government officials, and sympathizers gathered for a valedictory session in honor of Honourable Justice Azuka, the slain lawmaker representing Onitsha North Constituency I.

Hon. Azuka was abducted on December 24, 2024, and his decomposing body was discovered near the 2nd Niger Bridge, Onitsha, on February 6, 2025. His murder sent shockwaves across the state, prompting renewed calls for enhanced security measures.

During the solemn session, Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, paid tribute to the late legislator, vowing that his death would not be in vain.

*”We must reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the security and safety of our people. His brief but impactful service to this Assembly will forever be remembered,”* Udeze declared.

Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North, described Azuka as a peaceful and law-abiding leader whose life was cut short too soon. Former Onitsha North Constituency I lawmaker, Honourable Chigbo Enwezor, called for the establishment of state policing to strengthen the country’s security framework.

House members also took turns to pay tribute to their fallen colleague. The former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, was also present at the session to honor Azuka’s memory.

Hon. Justice Azuka was sworn in on December 19, 2023, following his victory at the Appeal Court. Until his passing, he served as Chairman of the House Committee on Civil Society Organizations, Establishments, and Labour Matters, as well as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions.

His funeral will take place tomorrow, February 15, 2025, with a burial mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Onitsha.
