Nigerian Union of Teachers Promotes Reading Culture in Anambra Schools

Date:

In a bid to revive reading habits among students amid growing digital distractions, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Anambra State Wing, marked the 2025 World Book Day with a donation of novels to primary and secondary schools across the state.

The event, held at the Teachers House in Awka, brought together key stakeholders in the education sector.

Speaking at the occasion, the NUT State Chairman, Comrade Grace Chukwudozie, highlighted the negative impact of mobile phone usage on students’ reading culture. She noted that many learners now spend more time on social media than on their studies. To address this, she announced that one hour would be dedicated to reading in all schools as part of the initiative. She also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his contributions to the education sector.

Representing the Chairman of the Post Primary School Service Commission (PPSSC), Secretary Mrs. Benedict Anagor reiterated that students are prohibited from using mobile phones in schools. She praised the NUT leadership for the book donation, describing it as a step toward improving literacy among students.

Similarly, the Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, represented by Lady Uche Egbusi, described the initiative as a groundbreaking effort aligned with the state government’s educational objectives. She prayed for wisdom and divine blessings upon the NUT leadership for its role in supporting education in the state.
