Nathaniel Bassey, Fans Slam Super Eagles Over World Cup Qualifier Draw Against Zimbabwe

Date:

Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has joined fans in criticizing the Super Eagles’ disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Victor Osimhen had put Nigeria ahead in the 75th minute, but a last-minute equalizer from Tawanda Chirewa in the 90th minute dented the team’s qualification hopes.

Reacting to the match, Bassey blamed the team’s lack of focus, saying, “One of our problems is managing small success. You score just one goal, and suddenly you think you have qualified for the World Cup. The Zimbabweans practically strolled into the net unchallenged while we watched.”

Fans also took to social media to express their frustration. Some criticized goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for overconfidence, while others blamed the coach for poor tactics. Influencer @_VALKlNG questioned whether Nigeria could still qualify, while another fan, @Choji_ES, highlighted the team’s over-reliance on Osimhen.

Tactical analyst Solace Chukwu pointed out defensive lapses, noting that William Troost-Ekong struggled and should be phased out of the starting XI. Meanwhile, some fans defended coach Eric Chelle, arguing that the players were responsible for the disappointing result.

The draw leaves Nigeria fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa, who have 13 points. With four matches left, the Super Eagles face a tough task in reviving their World Cup qualification hopes, starting with their next home match against Rwanda in August.
