Anambra Government, Carter Centre Conduct Over 80 Free Hydrocelectomy Surgeries, Target 165 Patients

Date:

The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Carter Centre, has successfully carried out over 80 free hydrocelectomy surgeries across three major general hospitals in the state—Enugwu-Ukwu, Umueri, and Ekwulobia General Hospitals. The initiative aims to reach a total of 165 patients.

During a visit to Umueri General Hospital, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, commended the Carter Centre for its support. He emphasized that hydrocele negatively impacts patients’ quality of life and self-confidence, making the surgeries essential. He also praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for creating the necessary conditions and providing logistical support to facilitate the procedures.

Dr. Obidike expressed satisfaction that the surgeries were being performed by state healthcare professionals, highlighting their expertise and the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector through infrastructural improvements and human resource development.

The Chief Medical Officer of Umueri General Hospital, Dr. Chinenye Obi, confirmed that the hospital is fully equipped for the procedures and reported no casualties since the surgeries began. However, she noted with concern that many people in the state are still living with the condition.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Somadina Nzegwu from Umuoba Anam, Anambra East Local Government Area, shared his experience, revealing that he had previously undergone a hydrocelectomy surgery three years ago at a cost of ₦380,000. He expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo and the Carter Centre for the free medical intervention, offering prayers for their continued support.

Hydrocele is a condition characterized by painless swelling in the scrotum due to fluid buildup around the testicles. It is common in newborns but can also affect older children and adults.
