PSC Appoints Agbonika as Edo Police Commissioner, Tasks Him on Crime Control

Date:

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has appointed CP Monday Agbonika as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State Command, replacing CP Betty Otimenyin, the state’s first female police commissioner.

In a statement released yesterday, PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani confirmed the appointment, noting that Agbonika was selected following an interview session presided over by the commission’s chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu.

The commission urged Agbonika to take immediate action against crime in the state, particularly in addressing the recent surge in killings. Argungu emphasized that his effectiveness would be judged by how he handles arrested suspects linked to these crimes.

“You have to sit up and work to gain the confidence of the people. Consult relevant stakeholders, document every incident and action taken, and ensure that those who need to be informed are kept in the loop,” Argungu advised.

The new commissioner was also cautioned against sidelining core police departments in favor of tactical units. In response, Agbonika pledged to operate strictly within the law and follow the guidance of the Inspector-General of Police in carrying out his duties.

Before his appointment, Agbonika served as Commissioner of Police, Mounted Troop, and Force Equitation Officer at the Force Headquarters. With 32 years of experience, he brings expertise in operations, investigation, administration, public information, and divisional management.
