The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the reported removal of Mathematics as a compulsory subject for university admission in Nigeria, describing it as “a regrettable step backwards.”
In a post on X titled “Back and Forth Policy on Mathematics: A Costly Mistake,” Obi said the clarification by the Federal Ministry of Education—that Mathematics would only remain compulsory at the secondary level but not for tertiary admission—“changes nothing fundamentally.”
He warned that the policy could make Arts students take Mathematics less seriously since it’s no longer required for admission.
According to him, “Mathematics is not merely about numbers; it cultivates logic, sharpens critical thinking, and develops problem-solving skills essential for everyday life.”
He added that in today’s data-driven world, removing Mathematics undermines efforts to build a competent and globally competitive society.
Obi questioned the motive behind the policy and urged authorities to reverse it, saying, “I therefore urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this decision in the interest of our students and the future of our nation. Education should move forward, not backwards.”
