Abia State Governor Alex Otti has restored electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area, bringing an end to a nine-year power outage in the area.

The power restoration project was executed by the Abia State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (ASOPADEC) under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities, fulfilling a commitment made by the governor in March 2025.

Speaking at the official switch-on ceremony held at Central Primary School, Obehie, Governor Otti, who arrived with members of his cabinet aboard the newly introduced Abia Green Shuttle electric bus, urged residents to safeguard the electricity facilities.

He stressed that community ownership was key to protecting the infrastructure, noting that acts of vandalism often originate from within the communities themselves.

Addressing concerns over electricity affordability, the governor directed relevant stakeholders to engage and develop measures to assist residents who may find it difficult to meet payment obligations.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, outlined the scope of the project, which included the rehabilitation of 30 transformer distribution substations, the installation of 12 new transformers, and the restoration of 37.5 kilometres of both high- and low-tension power lines.

Also speaking at the event, Aba Power Limited Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Bartholomew Nnaji, assured residents of a stable and uninterrupted power supply, explaining that electricity for the area would now be generated outside the national grid.
