Anambra Police Launch Operation Velvet to Enforce Third-Party Insurance and Tackle Traffic Violations

The Anambra State Police Command has intensified enforcement of the third-party insurance policy for motorists with the launch of *Operation Velvet*, a new initiative aimed at curbing car theft, reducing traffic congestion, and ensuring strict adherence to road regulations across the state.

Commissioner of Police *CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc MNIPS PhD*, officially launched the operation today, February 25, 2025, marking the end of the grace period granted to motorists to obtain valid third-party insurance certificates. The enforcement aligns with *Section 68* of the Insurance Act 2003, which mandates financial protection for accident victims and vehicle owners.

The multi-agency operation includes personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, the Attorney General’s Office, the Motor Licensing Office, Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other relevant traffic enforcement bodies.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, *SP Tochukwu Ikenga*, *Operation Velvet* seeks to restore discipline on Anambra’s roads while enhancing security for motorists and commuters. The initiative also aims to deter reckless driving and ensure compliance with road safety laws, ultimately making transportation in the state safer and more efficient.
