Chelle Unveils First Super Eagles Squad, Drops Ahmed Musa and Maduka Okoye

Date:

Eric Chelle has released his first provisional squad since becoming the head coach of the Super Eagles, ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The 47-year-old, who replaced Augustine Eguavoen, has been closely monitoring players from both domestic and foreign leagues. His 23-man squad reflects his observations, with notable omissions like Ahmed Musa and Maduka Okoye.

Chelle included two home-based players, goalkeeper Kayode Bankole and midfielder Papa Daniel, while KRC Genk forward Tolu Arokodare received his first call-up. Joe Aribo also made the list.

Solace Chukwu, Site Coordinator of AfrikFoot NG, described the squad as “underwhelming,” suggesting that even Eguavoen could have selected a similar lineup. Chukwu believes the squad hints at Chelle’s preference for a midfield that excels in possession, which might explain the exclusion of Frank Onyeka.

The Super Eagles are under pressure to secure three points against Rwanda in Kigali, having drawn three of their first four games in Group C. Failure to win would jeopardize their qualification hopes.

Chukwu acknowledged the difficulty of the task, noting Nigeria’s past struggles in Kigali and the challenge of adapting to a new coach.
