Commuters Lament Overcrowding on Oshodi Pedestrian Bridge Amid Closure

Date:

A large number of commuters were seen on Monday struggling to use an alternative pedestrian bridge in the Oshodi area of Lagos State following the closure of the main bridge linking Oshodi Bus Terminals 2 and 3.

The Lagos State Government had shut down the bridge in January, citing safety and structural concerns. However, the closure coincided with the arrest of pedestrians crossing the road by environmental sanitation officials, popularly known as KAI, forcing more commuters to use the alternative bridge.

The overcrowding was captured in a viral video, with some commuters complaining about the inconvenience and the risk of theft.

A commuter, Lanre Olakunle, expressed frustration over the situation, saying there was no sign of repair work on the closed bridge.

Another commuter on social media, Femi Longer, called for the immediate reopening of the bridge, stating it had been closed for over a month.

Reacting to the viral video, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, acknowledged the challenges faced by commuters. He assured that efforts were underway to provide additional pedestrian bridges in the area.

Wahab commended residents for obeying the law against crossing highways and urged them to continue abiding by the rules as the government worked to address the situation.
