National Assembly Approves Tinubu’s State of Emergency in Rivers as Fubara Denies Allegations

Date:

The National Assembly on Thursday approved the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State. The decision was made during separate plenary sessions in both chambers, where lawmakers debated the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state Assembly members. Despite opposition calls to reject it, the parliament endorsed Tinubu’s proclamation.

Fubara, breaking his silence, denied allegations that he facilitated attacks on oil installations by militants. He also refuted claims that he ignored rebuilding the state Assembly complex after ordering its demolition, stating that he acted based on expert advice.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara attributed recent tensions to remarks made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, which allegedly provoked reactions from the Ijaw community. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to peace and security, citing investments in law enforcement and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (retd), assumed office, warning against lawlessness and vowing to restore stability. He stated that his role was not politically motivated but aimed at ensuring peace in Rivers State.

The Senate and House of Representatives both backed Tinubu’s emergency declaration, with lawmakers urging the president to establish a mediation committee and monitor the situation closely. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced the decision following a voice vote, while the House prioritized the debate during its session.
