NUJ Anambra, Patriots Hold Workshop to Prepare Journalists for Gubernatorial Election

As the November 8 gubernatorial election in Anambra State approaches, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, in collaboration with Anambra Patriots for Soludo, has organized a training workshop for journalists focused on election coverage and professional ethics.

The event, themed “Ethical Journalism and Journalist Safety in Evolving Democracy,” was held at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Centre in Awka. It featured the participation of key stakeholders, including the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu.

Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of NUJ Anambra, said the training aimed to reinforce ethical standards and equip journalists with the knowledge to carry out their duties responsibly. He also thanked the Patriots for sponsoring the event.

Architect Okey Ezeobi, Managing Director of the Anambra State Bureau of Public Procurement, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the media’s role in shaping public opinion and urging journalists to consistently uphold the truth.

In his presentation, Dr. Moses Ugbo, speaking on the topic “Election Process and Role of Journalists,” described journalists as vital stakeholders in election coverage who must provide accurate and timely reports.

Sir Victor Agusiobo, in his paper on “Physical Safety and Risk Assessment for Journalists,” advised reporters to prioritize their safety while maintaining objectivity, especially in conflict situations. He stressed the importance of sticking to journalistic ethics.

Other speakers, including Chief Ejiamatu Enekwechi, Chairman of Anambra Patriots for Soludo; Mr. Christopher Molokwu, Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS); and Ukpa Ewa, Organizing Chairman of the Workshop, described the initiative as timely and necessary, noting that it would enhance the capacity of journalists ahead of the election.
