Prof. Lilian Salami Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at LAPO Women Leadership Event

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award (LAOLA) in Benin on Wednesday.

Salami was recognized for her contributions to the education sector, having lectured at various universities before serving as UNIBEN’s Vice Chancellor from 2019 to 2024.

Other winners included Saidatu Bello in the professional category, Pastor Isoken Uyi for farming, and Adora Ubochi in the business category. Each recipient received N500,000, along with accommodation, transportation, and meals.

Chairperson of the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), Osarenren Emokpae, highlighted that the 13th edition of the event was held in commemoration of International Women’s Day, emphasizing LAPO’s commitment to gender equity and celebrating women’s contributions to societal progress.

Emokpae noted that the theme, “Breaking Barriers: Accelerating Equity,” reflects the global push for gender inclusiveness and fairness. He stressed that achieving progress requires collective action, policy reform, and continuous advocacy to remove barriers hindering women’s full potential.

LAPO President and Chief Operating Officer, Faith Osazuwa-Ojo, added that the event serves as a platform to honor women who have defied limitations and made significant societal contributions. She emphasized the need to provide women with the necessary resources and support to reach their full potential.
