Super Eagles Coach Demands Full Focus Ahead of Zimbabwe Clash

Date:

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has called for maximum concentration from his players as they resumed training in Uyo on Sunday behind closed doors, preparing for their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.

Following their 2-0 victory over Rwanda last Friday, the team arrived in Uyo via a chartered Valujet flight and held their first training session under strict restrictions, with no media or visitors allowed. According to team media officer Promise Efoghe, the only open session will be on Monday for 15 minutes, followed by a press conference.

Chelle, not carried away by the win over Rwanda, emphasized the importance of the next match, as Nigeria looks to improve on their goalless draw with Zimbabwe in the first leg. “We need to be ready for the next game. My focus is on improving our team rather than discussing the opponent’s weaknesses,” he stated.

Nigeria, currently fourth in Group C with six points from five matches, trails South Africa, Benin Republic, and Rwanda in the standings. A victory against Zimbabwe would boost their qualification hopes, especially as group leaders South Africa take on Benin Republic in Abidjan.

The Zimbabwean team also held their first training session on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium’s training pitch. The match against Nigeria is set for Tuesday.
