The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has reiterated its commitment to nurturing young scientific talents through skill development and competitive platforms.

Speaking at the presentation of results for the 9th edition of the 774 Young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award (YONSPA) in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, emphasized the importance of a strong Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) ecosystem. Represented by the Director of Human Resources, Mallam Hassan Baba Ibrahim, she noted that YONSPA aims to inspire students to apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges, ultimately contributing to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

The nationwide initiative, covering all 36 states and 774 local government areas, identifies and rewards outstanding secondary school students in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Winners receive a presidential handshake, cash prizes, and scholarships to further their education at Nigerian universities.

Director of the Science and Technology Promotion Department, Mr. Ronald Ukpong, highlighted the significance of STEM education in positioning Nigeria within the global scientific community. The Chief Examiner, Professor Uno-Uno, also commended the participants for their improved performance and urged teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods to enhance future outcomes.

As Nigeria continues to harness the potential of its youth in science and technology, initiatives like YONSPA serve as a crucial platform for fostering innovation and maintaining global competitiveness.
