Anambra Police Commissioner Engages Truck Union to Prevent Future Accidents

Date:

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has initiated measures to curb truck-related accidents in the state.

On March 19, 2025, CP Orutugu met with members of the Truck Union at his office in Awka, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other relevant agencies to enforce safety measures for truck drivers and owners.

The engagement follows a fatal accident on March 15, 2025, at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, where a truck lost control and crashed into pedestrians, two tricycles, and a commercial bus, resulting in six deaths and multiple injuries.

Describing the incident as preventable, CP Orutugu outlined key strategies to avert similar tragedies, including risk assessments to identify hazards, regular vehicle inspections to detect mechanical faults, and safety training for drivers on adherence to traffic regulations.

The meeting was attended by FRSC Commander JN Alexander, senior police officials, members of the Truck Union, tipper drivers, and divisional police officers. The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety and preventing avoidable accidents.
