NFF Dismisses Reports on Super Eagles Coach’s Contract Termination

Date:

A top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports suggesting that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is considering leaving his role, dismissing them as false.

Chelle, who was appointed in January on a two-year contract, was rumored to be uncertain about his future following Nigeria’s mixed results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Reports claimed that concerns over his position led the NFF to hold an emergency meeting.

However, an NFF board member refuted the claims, stating that there had been no discussions about terminating Chelle’s contract. “There is nothing like that. I am a board member, and no issue has been raised about the coach’s contract. It is all fake news,” the official told The PUNCH on condition of anonymity.

While speculation swirled about his future, Chelle was traveling to Europe, where he is expected to meet with Nigerian-eligible players, including Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri. The teenage midfielder, who has represented England at youth level, has yet to commit to the senior team, leaving the possibility of playing for Nigeria open.

Since taking charge, Chelle has overseen two matches, leading Nigeria to a 2-0 win over Rwanda before a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo. With four games remaining in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Super Eagles sit fourth in Group C, with a slim chance of qualification depending on other results.
