Nigeria throws away lead in disappointing draw against Zimbabwe

Date:

Victor Osimhen’s goal seemed set to secure a crucial win for the Super Eagles, but defensive lapses allowed Zimbabwe to snatch a late equalizer, leaving Nigeria with just seven points in their World Cup qualifying group.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Nigeria failed to close out the game. While some players impressed, others struggled.

Nigeria’s best performers

1. Victor Osimhen – The goal king
Osimhen scored his 26th international goal, leading the attack with energy and intelligence. His movement and pressing troubled Zimbabwe’s defense, but his late substitution left Nigeria without a focal point.

2. Moses Simon – The relentless winger
Simon was Nigeria’s most dangerous attacking threat, constantly stretching Zimbabwe’s defense and creating chances. His pass led to the assist for Osimhen’s goal.

3. Calvin Bassey – The defensive rock
Bassey was solid at the back, making crucial interceptions and clearances. He stepped up when William Troost-Ekong struggled, even physically nudging him in a bid to refocus the captain.

Nigeria’s worst performers

1. Eric Chelle – Tactical errors
The head coach’s poor in-game decisions cost Nigeria two points. Instead of shoring up the defense after taking the lead, he introduced another striker, leaving the team vulnerable.

2. William Troost-Ekong – Defensive weakness
The captain had a poor game, looking slow and out of position. He failed to track Tawanda Chirewa, who scored Zimbabwe’s equalizer.

3. Samuel Chukwueze – Lacked influence
Despite slight improvement from the previous match, Chukwueze failed to exploit space on the right flank. His performance paled in comparison to Simon’s impact on the left.

What’s next?

With South Africa leading Group C, Nigeria cannot afford more dropped points in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Sharper decision-making and better defensive organization will be crucial in the next international window.
