A 70-year-old man from Ogoja, Cross River State, has died in a road accident at UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction, Awka. The crash involved a Coaster bus and an 18-seater commercial vehicle.
The bus was transporting members of the Knights of the Catholic Church from Ogoja to Abatete in Anambra State for the burial of their late member, Dr. Simon Ezego, when the accident occurred.
According to a survivor, Pastor Christian Ikere, the Coaster bus had brake issues from the start of the journey, but despite repeated warnings, the driver refused to fix them. Another passenger, Chidiebere Chukwu, said the bus, part of a three-coaster convoy, lost control and signaled other vehicles to clear the road. However, at UNIZIK Junction, it crashed into an inter-city commercial vehicle, leading to the accident.
The deceased has been taken to the morgue, while 29 injured passengers are receiving treatment at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.
