The Audacity of a Statesman: How Soludo Rescued Okpoko

— Mazi Ejimofor Opara

Okpoko — As we drove through various streets within, the slums that were the major nodes of the community could now be found only in the farthest parts of our memory. While I was still trying to recall the now faint memories I have about what was the largest urban slum in the southeast, a coarse voice thundered from behind “Soludo jidere Okpoko taa ka kuli-kuli!”

Following years of neglect that had taken its toll, leaving the area in a state of disrepair, one would agree that indeed something huge had happened to Okpoko. The roads, before now, were dilapidated, and in most parts non-existent, not a hospital, water, street light or any trapping of modern life could be found in the area. General social services were scarce, and the people had lost hope.

But then, something changed. Since Governor Chukwuma Soludo took office, and with him, a new era of transformation began. Soludo had a vision for Okpoko – a vision of a thriving community, where people could live, work, and raise their families with dignity.

With a sense of purpose and determination, Soludo’s administration set to work. They invested in infrastructure development, building modern roads, and providing essential social services. The Governor worked tirelessly to ensure that Okpoko received the attention it deserved.

As the transformation began to take shape, the people of Okpoko couldn’t believe their eyes. They had never seen anything like it before. The once-neglected community has been reborn, and the sense of hope and renewal was palpable.

Today, Okpoko has witnessed a brand new General hospital, named “Solution Hospital, Okpoko”. Okpoko has now seen the construction of 15.634Km road with another 3.6KM underway summing into 19.09km of roads. Public pipe-borne water is fully in place and streetlights now illuminate the hitherto dark and abandoned streets. This stands as a testament to the power of visionary leadership. The community is thriving, and the people are proud to call it home. Governor Soludo’s audacity and commitment to transforming Okpoko have inspired a new generation of leaders and citizens, showing that even the most neglected communities can be reborn with the right vision and determination.
