The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) alumni association has praised the institution’s decision to expel a student, Chimamaka Goddy-Mbakwe, for assaulting a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, after he interrupted her TikTok video.
A viral video showing Goddy-Mbakwe attacking the lecturer surfaced online on Wednesday, sparking widespread reactions. Following the incident, the university set up a disciplinary panel, which found her guilty of misconduct. The panel recommended her expulsion, a decision that was upheld by the university authorities.
In an official expulsion letter dated February 13, 2025, and signed by the acting Registrar, Victor I. Modebelu, the university described her actions as a gross violation of its disciplinary regulations, specifically Regulation 4.
*”Consequently, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of the University Senate, approved the Committee’s recommendation that you be expelled, and you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The expulsion takes immediate effect. You are expected to vacate the university premises immediately and return any university property in your possession,”* the statement read.
Reacting to the expulsion, President of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association, Ikechukwu Umeh, commended the university’s decisive action, stating that it would serve as a deterrent to other students.
*”It was not a one-man decision; there was a committee involved, and they recommended her expulsion in line with the university’s regulations. People have been reaching out to the alumni association for our stance, and we firmly condemn her actions,”* Umeh said.
*”While studying at UNIZIK, students must uphold good character and behavior. This kind of conduct does not reflect our values. We all graduated with strong moral standing, and we appreciate the management for taking firm action.”*
Similarly, President of the Theatre Arts Department Alumni, Ozi Okoli, applauded the university’s disciplinary process, stating that the decision aligned with expectations.
*”We anticipated a thorough investigation and a fair resolution. However, we were informed that the student presented a version of events at the panel that differed from what actually transpired, which shocked everyone,”* Okoli said.
*”As an African society, respect for elders is paramount. The Theatre Arts alumni strongly supported the expulsion, and we believe it was the right course of action.”*
The university’s decision has sparked discussions on student discipline and respect for authority within academic institutions.
