The United States Government has issued a stern warning to Nigerians, stating that anyone found guilty of visa fraud will face severe penalties.
The warning was shared by the US Embassy in Abuja via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, December 15, 2025. According to the embassy, the submission of falsified documents or the provision of misleading information during the visa application process can result in a lifetime ban from entering the United States.
The embassy emphasized that visa fraud is treated seriously under US immigration laws. It noted that applicants who lie or present fake documents risk permanent disqualification from ever traveling to the country.
This development further reflects the strict immigration posture of US President Donald Trump since beginning his second term in office. The president has consistently vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration, including the mass deportation of criminals who unlawfully entered the country.
US and Nigeria strengthen cooperation
The advisory comes shortly after a meeting between the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, held in Abuja. During the discussion, both officials explored areas of collaboration between their countries.
Ambassador Mills reiterated that the United States is committed to maintaining strong ties with Nigeria and working together on matters of shared interest. The US Embassy later confirmed the meeting, highlighting ongoing cooperation between both nations.

This is not the first time the US Government has warned travellers about permanent visa bans. In March 2025, authorities cautioned visitors against overstaying their visas, stressing that such actions could lead to lifetime travel bans and possible criminal charges.
At the time, the US mission made it clear that consular officers have full access to applicants’ immigration records and can easily detect previous violations. Travellers were reminded that it is their personal responsibility to comply with visa conditions.
Additionally, in June 2025, President Trump announced a new travel restriction policy that barred citizens of 12 countries from entering the United States, while nationals from seven other countries were subjected to stricter entry requirements.
